Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Matthew Plache, Executive Director of White Horse Recovery. Here’s what he shared about their impactful work:

“We provide mental health and substance use disorder (SUD) clinical counseling with NH-licensed clinicians, both on an individual basis and through our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) groups. We change lives. People come to us, and when they leave, they’re different people—they have their lives back. This transformation happens through both clinical and peer support services.”

Peer support services are offered in separate offices, staffed by Certified Recovery Support Workers (CRSWs). These walk-in centers are available at no cost, funded through a combination of donations and state grants. With four centers, White Horse is covering the northern 40% of New Hampshire with these vital services.

“Anyone suffering from SUD can come in and find a safe, stigma-free space, connect with community, and get whatever help they need. We provide camping supplies, food, access to showers, laundry facilities, and opportunities to work with specialists who have lived experience in recovery. Most of our staff have been there—and now, some of those who came through our program are helping others. Our clinical offices receive referrals from drug court and offer a 12-week IOP that combines group and individual counseling. This program is becoming well respected in the community and has seen great success.”

Growth and Expansion

White Horse has seen 20% growth in its clinical operations, expanded its clinical staff, and is preparing to open a recovery house in Center Ossipee, which will offer seven beds—right next to one of their walk-in centers. This proximity allows residents easy access to needed services. Clinical offices are currently located in North Conway and Ossipee.

“We don’t just save lives—we change them. Yes, we provide Narcan, and while that saves lives, we do so much more.”

Challenges and Commitment to Community

Matthew shared some ongoing challenges, as he said transportation and housing remain significant barriers, not just in Ossipee but throughout northern New Hampshire. White Horse is actively working to address both issues as part of their commitment to the community.

“The people who live in Ossipee are real and face real challenges. We’re here to help.”
